Located in the historic borough of Arvida, Riverside Elementary School, is the only English-language school in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.
Faced with a significant increase in student enrollment and capacity needs exceeding more than 400 students, the school’s original building required expansion to create new spaces and modernize the design. EXP provided multidisciplinary mechanical, electrical, structural and civil engineering design and construction supervision to support the development of a comfortable, bright and safe learning environment for Riverside Elementary School.
Arvida is a historic town in the Saguenay region and a heritage site of Quebec. Due to its historic character, the expansion project complied with numerous urban planning, environmental and technical requirements issued by the Ministry of Culture and Communications to ensure the new spaces would blend harmoniously into the town.
A sustainable and welcoming environment
Engineering by EXP’s team supports the new spaces’ welcoming, warm and bright design, enhancing the environment for both students and staff. The expansion further enabled the addition of windows, relaxation areas and collaborative spaces.
Through sustainable engineering design and energy efficiency measures, the project has exceeded energy performance requirements of the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (2015) by 30%. The work also aligns with the 2030 Plan for a Green Economy – an initiative by the Quebec government to promote a green economy.
