Electrifying Transportation: A First for Abidjan

A new system for reliable, fast and secure transportation in Abidjan

The Abidjan Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project will add new higher capacity bus transit to the city of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire, between Yopougon and Bingerville.

This important project is a driver of change for urban mobility and communities aiming to modernize urban transit infrastructure. When complete, the new system is intended to increase mobility in the city of Abidjan, generate income in the urban transport sector, reduce travel and wait times, increase safety and reduce pollution.

An energy grid to support the new BRT

With the collaboration of EXP’s energy management experts, an innovative and efficient solution was designed to ensure a reliable power supply for the BRT line. This includes the optimal integration of charging stations and bus depots into the system.

EXP’s involvement enabled local experts in Abidjan to gain advanced technical knowledge in the design, engineering and planning of electrical infrastructure through knowledge transfer and expertise from Quebec teams. The EXP teams analyzed the power supply network as well as the layout and routing of the BRT lines, helping to build specialized skills among the members of the Abidjan teams.

The integration of smart monitoring systems and connected sensors also enables real-time tracking of energy usage, significantly improving resource management. These advanced technologies reduce energy loss and promote sustainable operation.

Additionally, the installation of new high-voltage transformer bays (HTB/HTA) and the engineering of delivery and distribution substations have made it possible to implement innovative and high-performance international solutions, greatly improving the efficiency and management of the power network. Beyond technical innovation and the international transfer of expertise, Abidjan’s BRT project brings a significant advancement for transportation infrastructure in West Africa.

Reducing reliance on fossil fuels
By integrating electric buses, the project will promote energy transition and reduce fossil fuel dependence, thereby optimizing long-term operation costs and minimize the environmental impact. From a social perspective, the BRT will reduce daily transport time and offer a reliable, fast and secure service, which will significantly and considerably improve the quality of life for residents.

The Abidjan BRT project generates significant environmental benefits and contributes to the Ivorian metropolis’s energy transition and sustainability. The project reduces fossil fuel dependence through electric vehicles and ultra-fast charging technologies. Through the replacement of polluting infrastructure with high-energy-efficiency equipment, this public transit project will contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and optimizing energy distribution.
