Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport Upgrades, an important project for our Northern Ontario team

November 18, 2021

EXP has an established history in the aviation market, with more than 40 years of experience providing solutions to over 60 airports across North America. With no intention of stopping there, we are happy to announce that our Northern Ontario teams have been awarded the design, tender and administration contract for the Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport Upgrades project.

The Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport (CYZE) is located approximately 9 km (approx. 5.5 mi) west southwest of Gore Bay, in the Township of Gordon/Barrie Island, Ontario. Manitoulin Island is a unique scenic region. It’s the world’s largest freshwater island and comprises more than 100 inland lakes including Lake Manitou, the largest lake on an island in the world. The Island’s unique beauty and culture have made it an international destination point.

The Island can be accessed by road via the one-lane swing bridge located in Little Current, by the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry, from May through October, and by air via the Manitoulin East Private Airport and the Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport. This makes the Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport a key component in Manitoulin Island’s transportation system. As such the Airport has been given an excellent opportunity to make upgrades that will allow growth to the airport and the surrounding communities.

The scope of work for the improvements to the airport will include the construction of a new terminal building, upgrades to airfield electrical safety systems, expansion of the airport’s apron, extension of runway 05-23 and implementation of a new helipad.

“This is an excellent example of how EXP can pool from resources across the company to provide clients with expertise in specialized fields,” said Kevin McKay, EXP’s vice president for the Northern Ontario Infrastructure group. “Fantastic team effort and congratulations!”

Congratulations to Team EXP!
