The redeveloped East Village in downtown Calgary transformed a previously neglected area to a vibrant, sustainable community for 11,000 residents. The new residential and commercial development provides a unique character with quality public open spaces. Special emphasis was placed on innovative streetscapes with narrower carriageways, wider sidewalks, raised parking lanes, flush intersections, brick streets and sidewalks and distinctive lighting and site furniture.
With infrastructure over 100 years old and groundwater impacts from past land uses, redevelopment presented many challenges. Extensive improvements such as new stormwater wetland, deep utility replacement and preservation of historical properties proved essential for transformation. With integration of open spaces along the riverfront and Fort Calgary, the sustainable community now offers two new quality park areas and pedestrian friendly streets.
