Ottawa, Canada, is home to the scenic Kìwekì Point lookout, formerly Nepean Point. Reopened in May after a rehabilitation project, the site now connects to nearby Major’s Hill Park via the new Pìdàban Passage pedestrian bridge. Upgrades include an architectural lookout named “Whispering Point,” a new stormwater management system and an accessible path, all designed to encourage year-round community use.
EXP has been involved in the rehabilitation process since 2018, starting as a civil engineering consultant and then providing additional work in the geotechnical, environmental, mechanical and electrical disciplines.
EXP experts provided input for the perimeter wall foundation and updated drainage system. This stormwater system is unique because it utilizes underground bioretention infrastructure to store rainwater underneath trees, which can then be absorbed to support tree growth and reduce air pollution. EXP engineers used another advanced technology, the hydronic heating system, to melt snow and ice on Pìdàban Passage during the winter months. Embedded tubes transport glycol solution fluid, which has freeze-protection properties, resulting in a safer, more efficient pathway.
“We collaborated with designers from Janet Rosenberg & Studio (JRS) to deliver this redevelopment for the National Capital Commission and honor the city’s roots,” EXP Senior Project Manager Bruce Thomas said. “The goal was to foster a space for nature, reflection and connection, and the community’s response has confirmed that goal is being achieved.”
Ottawa is located on Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation territory and once served as a travel and trading route for Indigenous communities. In recognition of the land’s significance to Indigenous peoples, the lookout and bridge were renamed with Algonquin titles meaning “returning to one’s homeland” and “dawn” respectively. Interpretative panels and public art developed in close collaboration with the Algonquin Nation are also positioned throughout the area. EXP is proud to have contributed to this project, which used our skills to support Indigenous communities.
