NCH North Hospital Patty & Jay Baker Pavilion Inpatient/Outpatient Facility

Innovative systems and efficiencies supporting hospital development

The new 3-story, 76,000 SF Patty & Jay Baker Pavilion brings new inpatient and outpatient facilities to the NCH North Hospital. The program consists of an outpatient surgical department and clinic on the first floor, inpatient surgical department with a 16-bed medical surge patient care unit on the second floor and a third-floor imaging department. Chilled water, hot water and emergency power for this free-standing facility are provided through an expansion of the main hospital’s central energy plant.

Energy efficiency and system optimization

Designed to exceed the minimum energy code requirements, the design incorporates variable air and water systems, as well as premium efficiency three-phase motors and EC motors. Supply air temperature reset strategies minimize the energy usage of constant volume systems.

Sustainable energy practices to increase efficiency

Electrification of the new facility’s heating / hot water system is provided by a 300-ton modular heat recovery chiller located in the main central energy plant. An additional 800-ton chiller increased the chilled water capacity of the central energy plant serving both the main hospital and the new building to N+1. A new modular gas fired water boiler provides additional heating capacity.

Normal power is provided by a new 2000A, 277Y/480V service from a pad mounted utility transformer. Emergency power is provided through an expansion of the existing hospital generator plant. The essential feed is 277Y/480V, 2000A, providing full emergency backup. Bridging the transition from utility power to generator power, UPS systems and battery systems provide electrical power to critical imaging and operating room lighting and equipment.

Innovative technology design

Technology design for the new building brings structured cabling systems, surveillance and access control, audiovisual systems such as community access television, as well as nurse call design. Individual needs of the inpatient and outpatient aspects of the facility resulted in two separate structured cabling systems – separate backbone and horizontal pathways and isolated telecommunication room buildouts.
