Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre opened a new site, the Peter Cipriano Centre for Senior Care, to transform and improve the treatment services available for seniors. The 13,000 SF space offers comprehensive outpatient examinations to encourage continued independence throughout the aging process.
The facility features lounge areas, eye and audiology exam rooms, occupational therapy rooms, recreational therapy spaces, staff offices, accessible washrooms and a modular sound booth. A new main entrance was also constructed with a driveway, improved landscaping and a canopy made of exposed timber. The canopy uses sustainable material to create a prominent yet covered drop-off area.
Structural analysis for additional amenities
Interior renovations were completed for both the K Wing East Ground Floor and the K Wing Central Ground Floor. A thorough inspection of the existing floor structure was conducted to verify adequate capacity for changes in occupancy and new penetrations for mechanical and electrical services. Structural renovations included construction of a special recessed slab to accommodate a vibration-isolated audiology booth with a flush entry. The design objective was to determine the optimal renovation method for a functional, accessible space with specialized senior care.
EXP collaborated with HDR to design a main entrance that balances coverage and exterior aesthetics. Timber was chosen for the canopy due to its sustainable properties and to create a softer, more welcoming tone in front of the existing brutalist building with precast concrete façade.
Civil design and geotechnical work
EXP executed a traffic flow analysis to ensure the driveway accommodates a broad range of vehicles for site visitors, patient transfers and fire trucks. The geotechnical work included pre-design soil investigations, seismic site classification, foundation design review and construction inspection services.
