Multi-phase project to increase active data center square footage and upgrade mechanical and electrical systems to ensure adequate power supply and operational efficiencies. The reconfiguration and modification of 107,000 SF of existing space included minor modifications to the front 27,000 SF office space portion and significant upgrades to the back 80,000 SF portion which remained technical space. The addition of a new 15,000 SF generator building provides a back-up energy source.
The mechanical system is designed as a 2N system. The primary system includes a water-cooled chiller plant, backed up by a series of independent air cooled chillers. Air cooled chillers are isolated from the main distribution loop via 2 plate and frame heat exchangers (PFHX). A unique and innovative system that integrated airside economizers with ultrasonic evaporative cooling and humidification with in-line computer room air handler (CRAH) units for the cooling of the data centers was designed and utilized, allowing the data center to be cooled using outside air more than 8 months of the year.
The electrical system is designed with a dual 34.5kV utility service, with a medium voltage fused interrupter switchgear, A/B voltage regulators, medium voltage main-tie-main circuit breaker switchgear, Main-Tie-Main unitized substations, and A/B paralleling switchgears each with N+1 standby diesel generators. The electrical system for the data center consisted of an A/B system architecture from the UPS to the PDU’s, RPP’s, and dual-corded IT equipment. The power for the data center was designed to be scalable from 100 Watts/SF up to 200 Watts/SF.
