Incorporating technologies to optimize the facility
The project incorporates various technologies to optimize wastewater treatment while maximizing the use of existing infrastructure.
- A new SCADA system enables real-time monitoring, control and automation of all processes, facilitating safe and efficient operation management.
- Submerged membrane bioreactors (SBMRs) provide intensive biological treatment to promote nitrification and denitrification in a confined space – boosting performance without enlarging the lagoons.
- Dissolved air flotation (DAF) units allow for efficient separation of suspended solids, while a UV disinfection unit brings chemical-free removal of microorganisms for treated water complying with environmental standards.
Innovative, tailored approaches
This project stands out for its technical complexity and innovative approach aimed at maximizing performance without major physical expansion. EXP’s teams designed tailored solutions, including converting an existing lagoon to an equalization basin, installing high-capacity turbo blowers and coordinating multiple disciplines in a constrained environment.
The integrated management of upstream pumping infrastructure, including the construction of a new substation and connection to the existing pipe, illustrates EXP’s ability to orchestrate complex projects while allowing continuity of operations.

This project has had a major impact on the quality of life and the environment of the people living in the Bécancour region. The increase in wastewater treatment capacity makes it possible to meet demographic and industrial growth while preserving the natural environment. Infrastructure modernization within the plant reduces the risk of overflow and contamination, while optimizing operational reliability. The installation of an automatic sampler to monitor processes also enhances transparency and environmental compliance.
