A vital connection nears completion: New bridge in Airdrie set to transform access for communities

Bayview Phase 5 Bridge

A new bridge in Airdrie, Alberta, will complete community access for vehicles and pedestrians. Since 2023, EXP has taken part in the Bayview Phase 5 Bridge in Airdrie, Alberta, from preliminary design through to construction. The new bridge, located in the master-planned community of Bayview, crosses an established canal and pathway system that interlinks 700+ acres of development, making up the City of Airdrie’s Bayview, Bayside and Canal communities.

“The bridge is a vital piece of infrastructure that will now serve as a visual presentation of connectedness throughout the Bayview and Bayside communities,” Design Engineer Mike Toby said. “We are commemorating the recent achievement of setting the girders in place, together with Genesis — supported by EXP as their prime consultant and Chandos Construction, the contractor.”

A complex canal and stormwater management system

The bridge’s uniqueness extends beyond the design, which uses precast bridge elements and cast-in-place foundation. While the aesthetic resembles a concrete arch, a unique element is within the system beneath. The interconnected canal system doubles as a stormwater management feature, requiring engineers, developers, and the construction team to rethink their approach to this bridge as both a community amenity and utility.

“As a multidisciplinary team, we assessed this project from multiple angles — including land development, civil and structural design, electrical and streetlighting, landscape architecture, geotechnical and materials testing,” Business Development Director Richard MacNeil said. “This marks the completion of our third vehicular bridge project and the ninth overall serving these interconnected communities, all which EXP contributed to over nearly 30 years of working for Genesis.”

Bridging connections for communities

“This bridge is a meaningful milestone in creating tomorrows for residents in Bayside and Bayview,” Senior Land Development Manager at Genesis Dan Pochapsky said. “By strengthening access, walkability and connectivity, we’re shaping a more seamless and resilient community experience.  The bridge brings tangible benefits for residents today and future families for years to come.”

The new bridge is the final connection between the two communities. Serving as the keystone for residents and visitors in Bayview and Bayside, providing improved vehicular access and multi-mode connections to parks, schools and the surrounding neighborhood.

EXP brings a community-focused approach to each project, understanding that infrastructure is intended to serve the community — functionally, aesthetically and sustainably.

The construction of the bridge is expected to be completed in summer 2026.
