The City of Miami is working to revitalize and strengthen its waterfront. To support its efforts, EXP has been selected to complete roadway, drainage and lighting design services, with MCM, for the upcoming Brickell Bay Drive Seawall & Resiliency Improvements project. EXP will also provide utility coordination services for the project.
The vision is to adapt Brickell Bay Drive and protect it from future surge and sea level rise. A key element of success is encouraging connectivity, open spaces and the natural environment and local ecosystem.
The project includes four elements — roadway reconstruction from Southeast 14th to 15th Street, seawall development, drainage improvements and a new linear greenway for cyclists and pedestrians along the waterfront. The project will protect a stretch of 787 residential properties against environmental pressures in the Florida region, including increased flooding and sea level rise.
As part of the project, an 8-foot seawall will replace the existing 4.2-foot wall as an added safety measure. These walls defend against coastal overtopping, promote the growth of sea life and balance surface aesthetics with climate adaptation. In addition to the sea wall, the baywalk drainage will be conducted through a soil cell system beneath the sidewalk. This low impact design will result in improved water and air quality, increased rooting space for nearby trees and preservation of the site’s natural scenery.
“This project is about building resilience and protecting communities,” Municipal Senior Manager Jose Santiago said. “A sustainable future requires intentional actions to protect infrastructure from climate conditions, and we’re excited to work with the City of Miami to deliver long-lasting change.”
