A Canadian first: Permeable pavement street project in Laval

December 8, 2025

EXP is collaborating with the City of Laval on the development of its first street with permeable pavement. This initiative, a Canadian first, aims to counter the effects of more frequent heavy rainfall, prevent flooding and reduce pressure on underground pipes.

The project involves transforming Leclair Street into a permeable roadway, with no drainage to the sewer system, capable of infiltrating all runoff water directly into the ground. The design was adapted to address several complex challenges, including limited space, the absence of a stormwater network, and the preservation of mature trees.

EXP’s professionals participated in studies and design, in collaboration with the City of Laval’s engineering service. During the construction phase, the team performed quality control of the materials. EXP will continue to support the City in the pilot project by conducting water infiltration tests. This rigorous monitoring will measure the pavement’s performance and provide data to support sustainable development practices.

“The Leclair Street project offers a unique opportunity to test the concept of permeable pavement and to gain information that can be applied on a larger scale,” EXP’s Director of Materials Control Samir Khasbi said. “This project could inspire other municipalities across the country. It’s an important step in sustainable innovation.”

EXP’s involvement in this project reflects its commitment tosustainable solutions and building a more resilient future.
