The new MSC Miami Cruise Terminal (Terminal AA) at PortMiami creates a transformed travel experience for passengers.
Spanning more than 518 acres, PortMiami’s cruise port is the largest and busiest cruise port in the world. The cruise port accommodates over 8 million cruise passengers and over 1,000 cruise ship calls.
As the largest cruise terminal in the world, Terminal AA has capacity to serve three ships at a time and process 36,000 passengers a day. The new terminal will improve the cruise experience for passengers and allow for more efficient processing of passengers. The design is sleek, modern and spacious, allowing for the industry’s latest ships to use the terminal. In addition to state-of-the-art passenger facilities, the new terminal building includes office areas, multi-level parking for at least 2,400 vehicles and a new road connection.
The EXP team provided program management/owner’s representation and peer review services for the new 490,000 SF terminal and associated projects.
Program management and owner’s representation
Program management was critical to the success of the project. EXP’s program management services included owner’s representation, contract administration, project management and construction management. EXP’s team advised PortMiami throughout the various stages of the project and during interfaces with numerous stakeholders.
Our team’s support to PortMiami encompassed stakeholder management, external communications, project schedule review, project schedule risk assessment, advising on construction and design cost estimates and more.
Independent design review through an integrated design practice
EXP completed an independent design review for the new MSC Miami Cruise Terminal at Berth 8, combined concourse to the eastern limits of Berth 9, associated building additions and site improvements. EXP’s peer review team was comprised of architects and multidisciplinary engineers from our integrated design practice. Engineering disciplines included structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, telecommunications, security, civil, civil utilities, life safety and more.
The peer review efforts leveraged our experience with key stakeholders such as Customs and Border Protection. Designs were evaluated to Customs and Border Protection technical design standards and for integration of appropriate biometric technologies for passenger processing.
Utility assessment
Utility work on-site was an important component of the terminal project. With the new terminal located at Berth 8, the easternmost site of PortMiami, the new terminal’s concourses extend to Berths 9, with plans to extend to berth 10 in the future. EXP performed a preliminary utility assessment for expansion at Berth 10, connecting back to the main terminal via a combined, two-story concourse.
Data acquired and developed during the first phases of the preliminary utility assessment were used to identify potential connection points, capacity enhancement requirements and potential conflicts between existing and proposed infrastructure. The utility assessment resulted in recommendations for new infrastructure and upgrades to existing infrastructure.
