Gun Lake Casino Resort

Engineering and lighting design for new luxury expansion

Gun Lake Casino and Resort in Wayland, Michigan has expanded to offer new luxury amenities and experiences that elevate the facility to a new level. The expansion furthers the client’s goal of providing guests with all-inclusive service and amenities options in a single facility. The additions, which include modern guest rooms, a restaurant, an event space, a spa and an indoor pool, are designed to elevate the resort and create a relaxing, high-end environment.

The resort has entertainment for all guests, whether they are looking for a fun dining experience, spa day, luxury rooms, live performances or a gambling destination. The event space, Wawyé Oasis, is a unique 32,000 SF entertainment complex where a wide range of experiences and events can be held in one place. It features two distinctive pools, a 21+ VIP pool and a family pool, and the ability to accommodate different types of events such as comedians, DJs, singers and more. This versatile venue is not common in Michigan and brings more opportunities for events in the region.

Elevating guest spaces through lighting design

The indoor pool and surrounding spaces required careful planning and coordination to meet safety and code requirements for indoor pools, while still maintaining a high level of thematic design. Due to material restrictions and the pool’s corrosive environment, EXP’s lighting designers strategically chose materials that adhere to safety regulations while still achieving the atmosphere the client desired. Lighting also played a role in creating the atmosphere of the spa. Elements like star ceiling panels and curtain lighting create a calming environment and give the illusion of privacy in an open space.

Utilities and system design

EXP led the engineering design for the building systems. The expansion required complex coordination of utilities and mechanical, electrical and plumbing and fire protection services. Most of the expansion had to be tied into the nearby existing central utility plant to receive heating and cooling and power. Several parts of the expansion, including the gaming floor, entertainment space and restaurants, were also tied into the existing site-wide medium voltage power loop for electricity.
