The Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport (CYZE) underwent a $4.3 million terminal renovation to improve ease of transportation. Located approximately nine kilometers southwest of Gore Bay, Ontario, in the Township of Gordon/Barrie Island, the project upgrades are expected to support a boost in local tourism.
A new air terminal building opened in addition to airfield electrical safety upgrades to improve airfield lighting, apron expansion, an extension to Runway 05-03 and a new helipad. The 5000 sq. ft. terminal now touts a full-service kitchen, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, a Fatigue Management Centre and an HVAC system with in-floor heating capabilities. A Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) office and signage in both official languages have been added for a simple, accessible customs experience.
With these upgrades, the airport will now qualify as an emergency crisis management center in the case of a large-scale disaster. EXP provided contract administration and quality assurance services for this project.
Preliminary design and resource preparation
EXP first drafted a design and entered the approvals process with required tender documents and permits. For the terminal, an earth tone color palette was used to incorporate elements of the natural environment and evoke feelings of relaxation and security. The public was notified about the project and pre-construction meetings were coordinated to ensure proper communication and partnership with the surrounding municipalities.
Project management services
EXP helped facilitate the tendering process for the town of Gore Bay, meaning contractors could submit bids for this construction project. Construction document drawings were also produced and distributed for streamlined collaboration. EXP also ensured there was proper inspection of the upgraded facilities for a safe, functional result that benefits all travelers.
