On March 10, EXP was awarded for their expertise on two projects at the virtual American Concrete Institute (ACI) Quebec and Eastern Ontario Chapter’s Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards Gala.
Montreal Place des Arts Esplanade Rehabilitation Project – Winner, Apparent or decorative Concrete – Submitted by EXP
Our structural and civil engineering teams provided design and, this project included covering a 140,000 SF surface with precast concrete pavers and implementing concrete urban furniture as well as precast concrete stairs. Our experts were tasked with developing and implementing a replacement solution for the worn-out waterproofing complex while maintaining universal access to the site and seamlessly integrating each element into its environment. Collaboration and communication between EXP teams, suppliers and Place des Arts management representatives were key factors in the success of this project. Well done!

Darwin Bridges Reconstruction Project – Winner, Infrastructure – Submitted by the City of Montreal
Located on the Île-des-Sœurs, the Darwin Bridges are the first in the world to be built with concrete containing finely ground recovered glass. Upon completion in October 2021, the existing cement will be replaced with 88,000 pounds (40,000 kg) of glass powder, giving a second life to approximately 70,000 wine bottles and reducing CO2 emissions by 40 tons. The City of Montreal turned to EXP’s bridge engineering and materials testing teams to provide supervision for the reconstruction of the bridges. Our unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) team is also contributed to the project, providing aerial photos during the different phases of construction. In addition to being named winner in this category, the project also received two mention awards: Sustainability and Resilience Merit Award, and Innovative Use of Concrete Merit Award.
