EXP engineer competes in chicken coop pet architecture contest, proceeds donated to local animal rescues

At EXP, our approach is to meet with clients, discuss project goals and develop a resilient, effective solution. But how does that process change when our clients are animals? Or more specifically, chickens?

Senior Mechanical Engineer Devin Coyne, PE, challenged herself to answer that question as part of the annual ‘Triangle Barkitecture’ pet architecture fundraiser in Raleigh, North Carolina. This event invites AEC professionals to think outside the box and design structures that support animal well-being.

Since August, Devin has collaborated with colleagues from Method Studio and Raleigh Reclaimed to design and build the furniture. Entries typically cater to cats and dogs, but this submission marks the first time the competition will feature a chicken coop.

The final product had to abide by Barkitecture’s criteria — for example, structures must be easily transportable, freestanding and less than 5’x5.’ In addition to those standards, the team prioritized sustainable design through the use of reclaimed wood and recycled materials.

The joint effort paid off — the project won second place in the People’s Choice category.

“Even under this unique project type, we considered the safety and comfort of our client, similarly to EXP’s typical design process,” Devin said. “Our structure balances quality air flow with the need to keep predators and pests away from the chickens.”

This event fosters a sense of community amongst architects, engineers and animal lovers through a creative forum. Along with highlighting adoptable pets, Triangle Barkitecture raised over $9000 to benefit rescues and charities in the Raleigh area.
