Transportation partnership in Wisconsin to bring safer travel and increased capacity

October 27, 2026

As traffic volumes increase across Wisconsin, new challenges are emerging, including how to improve safety and capacity while minimizing disruptions to the public. Interstate-41 is undergoing a complete reconstruction, expansion and modernization to address those priorities through a comprehensive corridor improvement program.

As a whole, the project will reconstruct the I-41/WIS 441 system interchange, and either reconstruct or improve the nine existing service interchanges and 11 overpasses within project limits. These upgrades bolster safety for drivers and extend the life of the highway. The project also includes expanding 23 miles of I-41 mainline from four to six lanes and adding a new diverging interchange at WIS 47. To minimize traffic flow disruptions, four lanes of traffic will remain open on the mainline during peak hours. EXP is responsible for 2.2 miles of this expansion from the Lynndale Street overpass to the Meade Street overpass, as well as the STH 47 interchange.

Modernizing a critical highway corridor

The divergent diamond interchange at WIS 47 is a relatively new addition to the Wisconsin highway system — it’s the fourth of its kind to be built in the state. The interchange reduces potential collision points and allows ramp traffic to merge more seamlessly with oncoming highway traffic. This addition reduces the possibility of vehicle accidents, improves traffic flow and increases capacity.

Strong partnerships to advance communities

EXP has an extensive history partnering with state Departments of Transportation to strengthen transportation infrastructure by improving the safety and efficiency of highways and roads. On this transformative project, EXP is proud to lead the team responsible for contract administration, construction engineering, material reviews and overall project management on behalf of WisDOT.

Our team is also actively involved in community relations throughout the project. We prioritize answering questions from local businesses, residents and stakeholders to keep the community informed as the project progresses.

Scheduled for completion in summer 2028, the project represents a long-term investment in Wisconsin’s transportation network. Once completed, commuters across the state will benefit from safer, more efficient infrastructure.
