CTA Red Line Extension: Expanding accessible transit in Chicago

June 11, 2026

After decades in the making, the Red Line Extension project is coming to Chicago. Brought to life by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and the Walsh-Vinci Transit Community Partners, this project will extend the Red Line to the Far South Side of Chicago — reaching communities that have historically had inconsistent access to public transportation. Bringing this project to fruition is a community effort, with engineers, architects, community members, local government leaders and other stakeholders working together under the shared goal of improving the lives of Chicagoans.

With four new stations and 5.5 miles of new tracks, the Red Line Extension is not only expanding access to public transit — it is opening doors to new opportunities, and a more equitable future for Chicago.
