Apollo Beach Extension project aims to combat congestion

December 14, 2021

A new project is underway in Hillsborough County that will help alleviate congestion in the area by extending an existing four-lane divided highway, creating an overpass on I-75 and providing additional routes for residents and commuters in the area. The Apollo Beach Extension Project involves the construction of two major bridges to add an alternate east-west corridor. One of the bridges is a steel flyover bridge spanning over I-75 and the other is a 7-span concrete bridge that spans over the Bullfrog Creek wetland area. The project includes an offsite mitigation site, drainage improvements, full road construction and landscaping. Once completed, these bridges will connect three major routes and ease traffic on Big Bend Road, for easier traffic between two rapidly growing areas of housing developments in the area.

EXP is providing full Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) services for the project, including materials sampling and testing, inspection services, claims analysis, utility coordination and extensive coordination between the Florida Department of Transportation, Hillsborough County, the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

“The goal of the project is to help alleviate the congestion experienced just north of the project on Big Bend Road due to the extreme influx of housing developments in the surrounding areas. Once completed, the Apollo Beach Extension project will add a much-needed alternate east-west corridor spanning over I-75,” said Senior Project Engineer Kevin Daugherty, PE.

The project is expected to be completed by summer 2022. For more information on EXP’s transportation services in Florida, contact Kevin Daugherty.
