I-395 Pedestrian Baywalk and Bikeway Bridge

Miami, FL, USA

The conceptual design of the new pedestrian baywalk and bikeway bridge in Miami presents an iconic solution based on connectivity, ecology and mobility. At the heart of the bridge’s unique design is connectivity to a multi-modal system for the city’s pedestrians and travelers.

Opening avenues for active mobility

As more cities continue to work to improve active mobility, the City of Miami Office of Capital Improvement engaged EXP to design the I-395 pedestrian baywalk and bikeway bridge. The primary purpose was to connect the city’s baywalk under the MacArthur Causeway to the existing baywalk fronting the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

Designed for the community

The new bridge will offer a new way for pedestrians and cyclists to travel through the city. The proposed design is a 20-foot-wide, 500-foot-long bridge that creates a passageway over the water. EXP led the design team, bringing together multidisciplinary services, including architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, lighting, geotechnical and sustainability.

The conceptual design of the new bridge leverages downtown Miami’s waterfront views, improves connectivity between inland areas and the waterfront and increases easy access between downtown parks and green spaces. In addition to waterfront access, the bridge will contribute to sustainability efforts, creating a naturalized waterfront and shoreline boosting the surrounding terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
