EXP has been awarded a $14 million contract to provide architectural/engineering (A/E) services for Miami-Dade Aviation Department’s (MDAD) Terminal Wide Re-Roofing and Lightning Systems Upgrades project. Currently, the existing roof at Miami International Airport (MIA) ranges from approximately 9-12 years old. To ensure operational readiness of the airport terminal and maintain the integrity of the building, MDAD embarked on a plan for complete re-roofing with enhanced lightning protection in the North, Central and South Terminal Areas.

MDAD is committed to providing travelers with world-class experiences. “As one of the world’s busiest airports, it is important to understand potential operational impacts to mitigate any risk to meet MDAD’s mission,” said EXP’s Director of Aviation Marcos Souza. He continued, “With over four decades of proven experience with all types of roofing systems and over 40 years of experience providing award-winning solutions to airports across North America and worldwide, our global expertise and partnership with small businesses brings the knowledge and collaboration required to best serve MDAD with a feasible and sustainable re-roofing solution.”

The re-roofing and lightning project began in September 2021 and involves a four-phased approach. The project, consisting of over 400,000 square feet of re-roofing and lightning, is scheduled to be completed in September 2028.
