Sustainable new school for Ontario

The new 61,000 SF Thundering Heights Public School provides a modern new educational facility for the region. The 3-story K-8 school includes classrooms, gymnasium with stage, multi-room daycare center and designated play areas, outdoor athletic facility (combination soccer field and baseball diamond), administrative offices, parking facilities and ancillary facilities for storage. Located at the intersection of Kalar and McLeod, the facility accommodates 600 students in an area that continues to expand in the midst of a residential development boom.

Multidisciplinary design approach

EXP provided multidisciplinary engineering and landscape design services for the new school. Our team also helped coordinate site plan applications and approvals with municipal authorities, including the District School Board of Niagara.

Our integrated approach maintained a holistic, high-level view of the project across its timeline, from planning and schematic design through construction.

Landscape and civil design for enhanced learning

EXP’s landscape architecture team developed detailed designs of outdoor learning spaces and a licensed childcare yard. Civil design addressed stormwater management, erosion and sediment control.

Designated pedestrian areas encourage safe circulation between parking areas, bus loading zones and building exits.

Sustainable design

In alignment with EXP’s commitment to sustainability, energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) were installed in the building. These units reuse energy from exhaust, which reduces the cost and carbon emissions associated with heating and cooling needs. The air-to-air heat exchange method also improves air quality, making it an ideal strategy for sustainable energy management.
