Limelight Boulder

Boulder, CO, USA

Supporting the United States’ largest all-electric hotel to date

Located near the flatiron mountain range, the new Limelight Boulder hotel provides a central contemporary gathering space for visitors and community members alike. Built through a partnership between the University of Colorado Boulder, Limelight Hotels brand and Aspen One, this project led to the largest all-electric hotel in the United States.

Limelight Boulder features 26,000 sq ft of combined indoor meeting spaces and over 9,000 sq ft of outdoor event space, as well as 252 guest rooms. Amenities include a locally famed on-site restaurant, corner café market, CU Book Store, rooftop pool, 2,000 sq ft game room, wet bar and more.

EXP served as a project consultant and completed mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP), fire protection and technology design services.

Local tourism hot spot

Limelight Boulder is perfectly integrated into the culture, landscape and nightlife of CU Boulder to provide a seamless experience of the city. Situated within The Hill, a historic and artistic neighborhood, the hotel is bordered by iconic social venues for visitors to enjoy.

Sustainability standards followed

In pursuit of LEED Gold certification, the building design considered sustainability criteria related to efficiency, performance, quality and innovation. EXP designed a 40,000-gallon hot water storage tank that can be strategically charged during off-peak hours and then distributed throughout the hotel during peak demand periods. This system reduces operating costs and optimizes energy savings in accordance with the city’s Time of Use rates.

EXP’s MEP design team and WATG architectural group worked together to coordinate the distribution of necessary engineering systems within the available spaces above the ceiling. Limited height restrictions required creative workarounds to accommodate sloped drain lines throughout the project. In some of the back of house spaces, ductwork was not possible, and vertical air distribution had to be considered to ensure environmental comfort was achieved.
