As part of a 2019 Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan for greater community recreation space, the Town of Grimsby’s Peach King Centre underwent a buildout and renovation process. The project involved the demolition of all but two ice pads and supporting spaces, with an emphasis on enhanced user experience. A double gym, walking track, fitness space, concessions station and several multi-purpose rooms were added to transform the space from an arena to a recreational environment that suits community program needs.
EXP provided mechanical, electrical, structural and technology design services for the project, including updated IT, security and audio-visual infrastructure.
As the town’s population continues to grow, area residents and local organizations need additional spaces to meet. The entire facility officially reopened in January 2026, but throughout most phases of construction, the original arena remained open to maximize the use of the existing structure.
Sustainable and community-centric infrastructure
Resilient infrastructure mitigates climate risk impacts, supports improved air quality and conserves energy resources. The entire 53,000 sq ft addition is all-electric and net-zero carbon emissions.
When projects involve a community resource, it is important to consider residents’ input and questions. EXP collaborated with the design partners and the township to gather insights and feedback from local residents. Hundreds of community members gathered for the project Grand Opening in January 2026 to see the collective vision come to fruition.
“Our teams worked with mcCallumSather to create an accessible hub with additional recreational capacity to encourage community connection,” Principal, Central Canada Buildings Murray Wickham said. “It’s important to have functional, safe spaces for individuals of all ages to enjoy.”
