Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre opened its 13,000 square-foot renovation, the Peter Cipriano Centre for Seniors Health. The new facility offers a wide range of crucial health services and community resources to cultivate a compassionate patient experience. EXP provided structural, civil, traffic and geotechnical engineering services to transform the space and fit the needs of Canada’s growing senior population, which is expected to increase by 50% over the next 20 years.
The enhanced center for senior care includes common lounge areas, exam rooms, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, additional staff offices and meeting rooms, a modular sound booth and accessible washrooms. These amenities provide a high level of support and independence for elderly patients in order to promote health, comfort and cognitive function, all outside of a hospital setting.
In addition to the interior renovation, EXP engineers designed a new main entrance to the Senior Care Centre. The entrance features a driveaway, upgraded landscaping and a canopy made of exposed timber. As a material, timber is becoming more popular in the AEC industry due to its sustainable properties and lower environmental impact.
“EXP worked closely with HDR architects to ensure the entrance would be prominent and identifiable, while also providing privacy and enhancing the visual aesthetics of the structure to make it warm and inviting,” Associate and Project Manager Luke Bowen said.
EXP partners with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on projects that prioritize the patient experience and provide important resources for community members.
