EXP a key design partner for Hurontario LRT in Mississauga and Brampton

September 17, 2019

We are proud to be a key design partner in the Mobilinx consortium, which has recently been announced as the Preferred Proponent for the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (HuLRT) project. The massive scope of the project will be supported by EXP experts in the infrastructure, transportation, buildings, geotechnical and earth sciences groups, with a focus on the south segment of the alignment and the Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility (OMSF). The south segment ranges about six kilometers from Lakeshore Road to Burnhamthorpe Road. EXP’s geotechnical services will extend over the entire length of the project.

“We’re honored to play such a significant role in the future development of our cities and neighborhoods,” says Mark Dvorak, president and chief operating officer. “This project will connect businesses and communities across Brampton, Mississauga and beyond. We’re proud to be a key member of the Mobilinx team, made up of like-minded and progressive companies coming together to deliver sustainable mobility solutions.”

Hurontario Street is the arterial backbone in the Region of Peel. The HuLRT will bring 18 kilometers of fast, reliable, rapid transit as part of an integrated regional transportation network that will cross four major highways (QEW, 403, 401 and 407) connecting Mississauga and Brampton with the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). This city-building and region-connecting project will advance the transformation of Hurontario Street into a vibrant, people-oriented corridor, linking communities and accommodating the major growth that is anticipated over the next 30 years.

The project was sourced using Infrastructure Ontario’s P3 model, an innovative means of financing and procuring large public infrastructure projects. Metrolinx has established the project requirements, and now Mobilinx will design, construct, finance, maintain and operate the LRT over a 30-year term. Other local LRT projects that involve the P3 model include the Eglinton Crosstown LRT in Toronto where EXP is responsible for ongoing environmental testing and monitoring.

“When the process began back in 2015, we were confident that Mobilinx’s long-term vision to deliver exceptional transit and transportation infrastructure was a winning formula,” explains Stan Gonsalves, executive vice president. “EXP’s multidisciplinary expertise is a perfect fit for this project team and we are in for the long-term.”

The corridor is currently being prepared for construction with utility relocations along Hurontario Street.
