NCH Patty & Jay Baker Pavilion: Cutting edge care in Southwest Florida

An orthopedic inpatient and outpatient facility is now a reality at NCH North Hospital in Naples, Florida. The Patty & Jay Baker Pavilion is a 76,000 sq. ft. comprehensive facility offering surgery, non-surgical treatments, imaging and rehabilitation services. The center includes an outpatient surgical department and clinic on the first floor, an inpatient surgical department with a 16-bed patient care unit on the second floor and an imaging department on the third floor. The Patty & Jay Baker Pavilion redefines healthcare spaces — meeting the needs of physicians, the care team and patients with efficient systems.

Designing systems for energy efficiency and resiliency

The existing hospital buildings receive several utilities through a Central Energy Plant (CEP). Through the expansion of the existing CEP, chilled water, heating hot water and emergency power are provided for both the new development and the existing hospital. An additional 800-ton chiller was added to the CEP to increase its chilled water capacity, and as part of an electrification effort, a 300-ton heat recovery chiller provides heating hot water to the Pavilion.  Additionally, a modular gas-fired water boiler was added for greater heating capacity.

Emergency generators were expanded to ensure that power is quickly restored in the event of an outage. In areas that cannot lose power while regular power switches to generator power during an outage — such as imaging and operating rooms — UPS systems and battery systems ensure the areas have constant power.

“In healthcare settings, it is crucial to have consistent power, water and temperature control systems,” EXP Senior Vice President Bill McGuire, PE said. “Over the course of this project, EXP ensured that the new development’s chilled and heating hot water, emergency power, oxygen and normal power were set up to support its needs, while considering that it has unique operations within it.”

Customized technology design

EXP worked on structured cabling systems, surveillance and access control, audio/visual and nurse call design. Given the outpatient and inpatient units’ own unique needs and processes, EXP designed two separate structured cabling systems, which included separate telecommunications rooms.

Curating the healthcare environment
