Taloyoak Sewage Lagoon Design and Construction

New engineered sewage system for an arctic region
Located in the Arctic region of Canada, the Hamlet of Taloyoak in the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut utilizes trucked water distribution and trucked wastewater collection to provide the community with water services. Historically wastewater was discharged into a natural 2-pond system for passive wastewater treatment, which then flowed through a natural wetland before discharging. The Government of Nunavut initiated a wastewater feasibility study to investigate alternative locations and alternative processes for the development of an engineered system.
EXP completed detailed design for the new sewage lagoon. The design team investigated six potential locations for the new facility, selecting two potential sites. The team completed advanced reconnaissance on both sites, including topographic survey, geotechnical investigation and ecological investigation of the wetland. The selected system brings a passive facultative lagoon system with a single cell lagoon and supplemental wetland system. This system was selected as the most appropriate technology to meet the effluent quality standards for the community’s water license.
The new lagoon was officially commissioned and is currently in operation for the region.
