The modernization of the Margaret Chase Smith Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse for the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) transforms this significant regional mid-century modern courthouse into a highly efficient sustainable green building.
Originally constructed in 1968, the modernization complements the original design with a simple palette. The renovation, addition and restoration project creates a balance between accessibility and security with a new program that includes 188,000 SF of Court and Federal Office functions.
Designed to restore distinguishing architectural features, the project includes the design of the plaza, new entry pavilion and lobby to incorporate a new single security checkpoint, the addition of courtrooms, updates to existing courtrooms and judicial chambers, and the realignment of tenant offices.
The project re-energizes the most compelling existing spaces to better than original condition while also incorporating numerous renewable energy strategies.
