    Aquarius Gold Mine

Aquarius Gold Mine is a proposed open pit mine and mill complex covering a total surface area of three km2. De-watering the open pit using traditional methods was not the best option, so exp recommended an artificially frozen earth cut-off wall surrounding the open pit to best minimize inward groundwater seepage into the pit during dewatering and mining operations. The frozen earth cut-off was 3.5 km in length and extended to depths of up to 135 m, making it the largest and longest artificially frozen earth wall ever built. We managed the project and provided consulting services for this project.

Our team was part of an interdisciplinary, inter-governmental private sector university team that investigated the nature and origin of saline groundwater inflow into CBDC's subsea coal mines. The team also looked at porosity and permeability of sandstones, overall mine water chemistry and outburst problems. This work was completed over three years with the results published in a three volume report.
