    Aquarius Gold Mine

    Project name :

    Aquarius Gold Mine

    Client :

    Echo Bay Mines Ltd./Kiewit Kilborn

    Location :

    Timmins, ON, Canada

    Aquarius Gold Mine

This project was a proposed open pit gold mine and mill complex. To develop the proposed 1 km-diameter open pit, dewatering of the saturated overburden was required; traditional methods would have resulted in the drawdown of several adjacent lakes during dewatering, overburden excavation, and mining operations. We recommended the construction of an artificially frozen earth cutoff wall around the 3.5 km perimeter of the proposed open pit. The frozen earth cutoff wall was installed to depths ranging from 90 m to 135 m through the overburden and into the bedrock surface. Unfortunately, the Aquarius project was cancelled just before commissioning of the frozen earth cut wall. Had it been activated, it would have been the deepest and longest frozen earth wall ever built. Exp managed the geotechnical and hydrogeological work at the site; the drilling program included as many as 16 drill rigs operating at one time, advancing the freeze pipes around the open pit perimeter.

    Canada's Malting Co. Silos

    Project name :

    Canada's Malting Co. Silos

    Client :

    Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corp.

    Location :

    Toronto, ON, Canada

    Canada's Malting Co. Silos

This malting facility was originally built in 1928. The site had been abandoned for more than 20 years, incurring significant water infiltration to 29 malting silos and a germination/kiln unit. The resulting water damage required a comprehensive structural assessment before opening the adjacent grounds to the public as part of the city of Toronto's waterfront revitalization efforts. Our team prepared a comprehensive building condition assessment to establish the status of the silos and other buildings on site noting any potential areas requiring rehabilitation and/or upgrades. In addition to standard engineering principles to define work required to the facility, we also designed a lowering video camera apparatus to conduct remote inspection of the interior walls and related structures.

    Client :

    Cape Breton Development Corporation

    Location :

    Cape Breton, NS, Canada

Cape Breton Subsea Coal Mines - Saline Groundwater Inflow to Mine Workings

Our team was part of an interdisciplinary, inter-governmental private sector university team that investigated the nature and origin of saline groundwater inflow into CBDC's subsea coal mines. The team also looked at porosity and permeability of sandstones, overall mine water chemistry and outburst problems. This work was completed over three years with the results published in a three volume report.
